Calculating Net Force: Balanced vs. Unbalanced Forces: a guide for parents
Grades 6–8 • Science • Free, no login
Add forces in the same direction, subtract opposing forces, and see why balanced forces mean no change in motion, not necessarily no motion.
Kitchen Table Prompt
Ask: if Dad pulls left with 20 N, how many 10 N teenagers must pull right to balance the rope? Exactly two. Then compare a car cruising at constant speed with one speeding up: moving does not always mean unbalanced forces.
Standards this lesson covers
- National / 44+ States (NGSS): MS-PS2-2 (Investigate how changes in motion depend on the sum of forces and the mass of the object)
- Texas (TEKS): TEKS 8.6A & 6.8B (Calculate how unbalanced forces change speed or direction; describe balanced, unbalanced, and net forces)
- Florida (NGSSS): SC.6.P.13.1 (Investigate how unbalanced forces change motion while balanced forces cause no change in motion)
- Virginia (SOL): VA SOL PS.10 & 6.8 (Net forces, balanced and unbalanced forces, acceleration, and forces in simple machines)
- North Carolina (SCOS): NC SCOS 7.P.1.2 (Explain balanced and unbalanced forces, including friction, gravity, and magnets, and resulting motion)
